The fashion for opening up the home with large doors is ready and waiting for something new. Marco Zen the UK sales manager for Italian hardware manufacturer AGB design tells Glass Times why timber wide span doors just got exciting.
The trend for ‘Grand Design’ style homes with open spaces that let in light, give great views and allow easy access is here to stay. Bifolds led the trend as an alternative to the bulky, old style inline sliding patio doors. Product design quickly improved and it now possible to open up whole sides of buildings to the outside.
However the reality is Britain isn’t the Mediterranean and we simply don’t have the weather to open up these doors very often. So most of the time the impressive bifold doors remain closed and the view from inside is broken up by the separate door leafs.
The many home building and renovation shows currently on TV highlight the problem for designers. They explain how ‘framing the view’ is as important a function of large span doors as opening up the house to the garden. Most of the projects you see on Grand Designs now feature lift & slide doors with large expanses of picture glazing.
Up to now this move towards lift & slide doors has been led by aluminium framed products. But AGB’s hardware technology has now placed timber at the cutting edge of slim-frame lift & slide door design.
AGB has been designing and manufacturing hardware for windows and doors as a family run business in Italy for more than 60 years. Its attitude to design and engineering is summed up in the company vision that “technology must be beautifulâ€.
A market leader in Italy, AGB has established a reputation in the UK for high quality engineered hardware. It supplies a range of cylinder locks, multipoint locks, hinges and lift & slide components through a network of distributors across UK and Ireland.
AGB has now launched the slimmest timber frame lift & slide door hardware system in the market. Called Imago, the new wood door system enables companies to manufacture a visible frame depth of just two centimetres. This super-slim design fills a real gap in the market for companies to offer customers a panoramic view, beautifully framed in timber with maximum glass area and minimum frame width.
Imago Lift & Slide is a new concept with Italian style at its core. It is a complete timber lift & slide door brand with a dedicated website where architects, designers and homeowners will be able to find inspiration and specification advice. There are also details of Imago Points - the manufacturers and sales outlets of Imago doors across the UK and Ireland.
Imago has been developed from AGB’s popular high quality hardware systems for timber and hybrid timber/aluminium lift & slide doors. The range offers thermally broken composite and aluminium thresholds and all the systems are fully CE mark compliant.
We support customers by cascading full CE mark test documentation for AGB door hardware systems making it as easy as possible for joinery manufacturer’s and installers to sell complete doors. We also provide full technical and training support through our UK distribution partners.
The large span door market in the UK is exciting. You only have to visit a Grand Designs or Homebuilder & Renovation Show to see the public appetite for innovative products that can help them create their dream home. Timber is the window and door frame material of choice for many self-builders, architects and designers. Imago provides them a solution to create large expanses of glass with a slimline timber frame.
Imago has been hugely popular since we launched it in Italy last year and we’re hoping to mirror this success for our customers in the UK.
